Highly evolved one-trick words

In the most recent edition of The Penguin Dictionary of Troublesome Words, Bill Bryson writes
"The ground is the only place to which a structure can be razed. It is enough to write 'Zurich's autonomous youth centre was razed yesterday'."

Some other words that were once one-trick have also taken the natural next step:

On the TV series Ally McBeal, the scriptwriters, through the character Richard Fish, have reduced the phrase "let bygones be bygones" to a simple "bygones".
"kipper" was once "kippered herring"
paragon (of virtue)
